Tech Bytes: Sun Sets Up Network Security Products Unit

Sun Microsystems Inc. has created a network security products group to define strategies and products that will promote secure use of the Internet.

The group was chartered to encompass such techniques as data encryption, authentication, access control, and firewall defenses as they apply to the Internet as well as intranets and extranets and various trading and commercial channels.

"Sun understands the importance of a secure network," said Janpieter Scheerder, president of the company's SunSoft unit. "We were one of the first companies to establish a commercial Web site and corporate intranet, and quickly adopted a security policy to protect our assets. Sun intends to set the industry standard for security and to provide the premier solution for network security."

Reporting to Mr. Scheerder as head of the network security products group is Humphrey Polanen, former general manager of Sun's Internet Commerce Group, who previously spent 14 years with Tandem Computers Inc.

He will be joined by Smita Deshpande, director of marketing and business development, who has held various marketing posts at Sun the past nine years and by network engineers Glenn Scott and Bill Danielson.
