TruWest Credit Union is using software from the Canadian vendor Messageware Inc. to secure email attachments.
Messageware's AttachView program converts attachments into secure Web pages to prevent information from being accessed by other computers. The service is intended for users of Microsoft Corp.'s Office Outlook Web App and Outlook Web Access.
"On occasion, sensitive data in the form of email attachments would undoubtedly be pushed out to OWA users," Tom Gessel, a senior vice president and chief technical officer of TruWest, said in a press release on Thursday. "If even one user inadvertently allowed member information to reach unauthorized individuals, data could be compromised."
TruWest is based in Tempe, Ariz, and has 60,000 members. Messageware, of Toronto, said its software is used by more than 2,500 companies with more than 5 million mailboxes worldwide.
