Unisys upgrades its branch system to merge teller, platform functions.

Unisys Corp. has introduced a new component to its retail banking software and services.

The software, called Financial Business Architecture Finesse 2000, is meant to be used with the Blue Bell, Pa.-based vendor's branch delivery system to enhance customer service and retention.

Finesse, which runs on personal computers, offers branch, teller, customer service, and management applications using object-oriented technology -- which allows programmers to write software quickly by breaking it into interlocking pieces -- in a Microsoft Windows environment.

The system is a collection of branch-automation application functions and sample transaction sets that can be used to integrate branch bank teller and platform functions.

"We have designed the system to be a full-service application that is focused on the platform side of a bank's operation," said Colleen Madigan, a Unisys project manager.

David Medeiros, a consultant at the Tower Group in Wellesley, Mass., said Finesse offers banks a base for building their branch-automation systems.

Software Aimed at Large Banks

"It offers everything a bank needs to have in order to build the foundation of its operations," he said.

"The system targets large banks that want advantages of object-oriented applications development and client-server branch-automation features, while retaining the flexibility available with more open computing platforms."

Unisys officials said that although no banks are using the system in the United States, two banks in Europe are using it. They declined to name the institutions.
