Unusual, Er, Praise for Senate Banking Panel's Heitkamp

WASHINGTON — Sen. Heidi Heitkamp was just sworn into office in January, but she's already made a quick impression on her colleagues.

The North Dakota Democrat, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, cosponsored two pieces of legislation this week — a bill that would enable increased student loan refinancing and one that would overhaul the mortgage finance market, an effort led by Sens. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., and Mark Warner, D-Va.

At a Tuesday press conference for the housing reform bill, Corker took a moment to single out Heitkamp for her contributions — relying on his Southern charm.

"I know most of these members really well — we've served together for a long time. But Heidi is a new member to the committee and she is, to use an adage back in Tennessee, stronger than battery acid. She has, I think, added a degree of passion to this that I greatly appreciate," he said.

Corker hastened to add: "I hope you take that as a compliment." (She said she did.)

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., then prefaced his remarks at a Senate Banking Committee confirmation hearing on Thursday with more praise for the former state attorney general — this time for her athletic prowess.

"I just see our member from North Dakota came in. She had a great single yesterday at the woman's softball game, so congratulations, Heidi," he said.

Unfortunately, lawmakers came up short in the congressional women's softball game held Wednesday night, losing to the Washington press corps 11-8 in the annual charity matchup.
