Verifone's profits up 19% in quarter.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- The leading global provider of point of sale terminals, Verifone Inc., reported net income of $7.4 million for the second quarter.

The income figure, which translates into 31 cents a share, is 19.1% higher than the $6.2 million earned by the Redwood City, Calif.-based electronic-payment services provider a year earlier.

Operating revenues for the second quarter ended July 1 rose 18.6% to $77.7 million.

Verifone's chairman Hatim Tyabji said the second-quarter performance was driven by international business, which rose 84.8% over the year-earlier period.

Meanwhile, the company experienced a 1.2% second-quarter decline in the U.S. financial retail segment. Emerging markets, including supermarkets, petroleum/convenience stores, and electronic-benefits transfer, contributed $11.6 million in the second quarter.
