Thirty-two Rhode Island government organizations will use payment-processing services from Point & Pay LLC integrated into Opal Data Technologies Inc. software, Point & Pay announced Nov. 16.

A unit of Troy, Mich.-based independent sales organization North American Bancard, Point & Pay expects additional Rhode Island municipalities to join the program.

Providence, R.I.-based Opal Data provides financial software and services that enables government users to track information, such as property tax balances and fees for other government services.

The transaction volume likely will not be large, but the dollar amount of the transactions will be significant, Kevin Connell, Point & Pay president, tells PaymentsSource. “You can imagine property taxes in the Northeast,” Connell says.

The municipalities do not pay an acceptance fee in this deal. Instead, Point & Pay will earn revenue from service fees cardholders pay. Those fees will vary depending on the municipality and the size of the transaction, Connell says.

North American Bancard bought Point & Pay earlier this year as it sought to expand its volume of recurring payments (see story).
