Safaricom operates the widely popular M-Pesa service in the East African region, and Airtel operates a newer but similar service in the region under the Airtel Money brand.

Under the agreements the two operators signed, 3G Direct Pay will process and settle transactions made through either service immediately for the clients using a cloud-based model, a spokesperson for the e-commerce company tells PaymentsSource.

The spokesperson declined to disclose the financial or technical details of the agreement.

3G Direct Pay provides settlement services to more than 250 hotels, airlines and tour companies in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia.

Historically, when a customer has made a payment through any mobile funds-transfer service provider, it could take hours and sometimes days before the operator settles the payment, he says.

3G Direct Pay supports Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB and PayPal payments for its online booking and shopping services, the company says.
