Airtel Money and Total Oil are rolling out a mobile payment service for consumers in Uganda to purchase fuel and make in-store purchases with their Airtel accounts at Total gas stations.
Currently, the Airtel mobile payment system can be used at 45 gas stations in Uganda, with plans to expand it to all 125 Total stations across the country in the coming weeks, Airtel states in a press release.
Consumers using Airtel dial a code, select "Pay Bill" and enter a gas station identifier displayed at the station. To complete the transaction, the consumer enters the amount to be paid along with a reference number, confirms the payment and types a PIN.
At some Total stations, consumers will also be able to deposit or withdraw money from Airtel accounts.
"Airtel Money is a fast, instant and reliable service" that has gone a long way in ensuring convenience and saving time for customers traveling in Uganda, Airtel's managing director Arindam Chakrabarty says in the release.
As part of the promotion for the partnership between Airtel Money and Total, the companies are providing the first 3,000 customers with an extra liter of fuel when they pay more than 50,000 Uganda shillings (U.S. $20) using Airtel Money at the station.

Total also established an agreement in 2013 with French telco Orange to provide payments and money transfers through Orange Money accounts in all Total stations in Africa and Middle East. Orange first launched Orange Money to serve the region in 2008.
