IMGCAP(1)]

American Express Co. Wednesday said it had signed an agreement with United States-based First Data Corp. to acquire and process AmEx card transactions in Poland. First Data will assume responsibility for signing new merchants to accept AmEx cards, managing relationships with existing merchants and processing transactions on the AmEx network, both companies said in a statement. "Together we will continue to focus on expanding card acceptance and usage at merchant locations that attract  high-spending American Express cardholders from within and outside of Poland," Pascal J. Guignard, AmEx vice president and general manager of global network services in Europe, Middle East and Africa, said in the statement. U.S.-based AmEx signed an agreement with Millennium Bank Polska S.A. in 1999 to issue AmEx-branded cards. Neither First Data nor Amex offered comment Wednesday.
