The three new benefits include a $200 airline-fee credit to cover such costs as baggage fees, in-flight meals or flight changes; a 20% Membership Rewards travel bonus when using points to pay for all or part of travel costs; and a mobile travel application valued at $49 per year that makes it simpler to manage such travel plans as flight updates, seat selection and airport guides.

AmEx added the benefits because holders of its Platinum cards take about 10 trips on average per year for pleasure, according to an AmEx spokesperson.

“We want to make the Platinum card the premiere lifestyle and travel card by enabling cardholders to get value out of their $450-per-year fee,” the spokesperson tells PaymentsSource. “In talking with our customers, the new and existing benefits, like airport-lounge access and the $200 credit, more than pays for itself.”

AmEx is advertising the new benefits at several U.S. airports, including those in New York, Newark, Houston and Cleveland. The issuer also is using outdoor advertisements near airports and on billboards, and it is buying print ads in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times.
