Android Wear engineer Singleton leaves to join Stripe

Stripe has hired David Singleton away from Android Wear to lead engineering for Stripe.

Patrick Collison, Stripe's cofounder, announced the hire of Singleton, who had a similar role at Android. Android Wear debuted a new version earlier this year, with support for Near Field Communication-equipped smartwatches.

LG quickly became the first watch to support Android Wear, and 9to5Google reports Singleton's departure will leave Google without a key engineer as it upgrades the platform that supports the wearable technology.

Stripe's recent initiatives include Elements, a service that works like building blocks to make it easier for merchants to add or update new features without requiring substantial programming skills. The payment company is also expanding internationally and diversifying its range of merchant services.

Singleton had not confirmed the move as of Friday afternoon, though CNBC reports Google did confirm Singleton's departure.
