United States-based Hypercom Corp. says it is providing an unspecified number of point-of-sale terminals for a 12-merchant trial of Near Field Communication-equipped mobile-phone payments at the Docklands retail and housing development in Melbourne, Australia. Announced in August, the trial involves 200 consumers using the phones for transactions of less than AU$35 (US$23 or 17 euros). Hypercom says its T4200 countertop POS terminal is equipped with a contactless reader for the trial. Telco Telstra, National Australia Bank and Visa Inc. announced the trial in August, saying it would run over several months. Participating consumers downloaded a payment application to their phones to enable NFC payments.
