Citizens Financial Group Inc. is paying customers of its Citizens Bank and Charter One Bank retail-banking units 10 cents for each payment they make electronically, up to $10 per month, the Providence, R.I.-based company announced Wednesday. The banks will deposit the payments automatically into customers' accounts as part of their GreenSense program, which includes free checking, online banking and bill payment and paperless monthly statements. Transactions eligible for the 10-cent reward include signature- and PIN-debit card transactions, online bill payments and recurring bill payments. The banks also will issue enrolled customers GreenSenseMasterCard debit cards made from recycled plastic. Citizens Financial Group estimates the program will reduce the company's paper consumption by 700,000 pounds in the program's first year.
