Some 53% of consumers who responded to a recent American Bankruptcy Institute online survey believe total bankruptcies this year will increase by more than 35% from the nearly 1.1 million U.S. cases filed last year. Respondents included institute members and the general public. The Alexandria, Va.-based group conducted the poll Jan. 8 to 12 and asked, "Filings will rise by what percentage in 2009?" Some 12% of respondents predicted filings would increase by approximately 35% this year, while 17% said filings would increase by 30%. Some 13% of respondents said filings would increase by 25%, and 3% said filings would increase by less than 25%. Bankruptcies in 2007 totaled 850,912, an increase of 37.8% from 617,660 in 2006.
