Barclaycard US, UK-based Barclays PLC's card operations in the United States, is opening a new call center in Newark, Del., that initially will create 300 jobs and eventually up to 500 jobs over the next five years, the company announced today. Barclaycard's other call centers in Wilmington, Del., and Wilton, Maine, will remain operating, although some of the Wilmington staff will work at the new facility, the company says. Barclaycard is opening the center to meet increasing demand for services. The issuer's portfolio has more than doubled since 2007 and is a top 10-ranked card issuer, Barclaycard US CEO Lloyd Wirshba said in a statement. The company in November opened a new administrative office to support its global operations in Long Island City, N.Y. (CardLine, 11/19/08).
