Commuters in New York's Nassau County will soon be able to pay their bus fares with a smartphone app.
The smartphone ticketing option comes out of an agreement between transit mobile ticketing provider Masabi and the Nassau Inter-County Express. The service will begin beta testing in the spring and debut this summer, according to a Feb. 10 press release.
Masabi's JustRide smartphone ticketing system will allow bus riders to purchase tickets ahead of time. Upon boarding the bus, they will display their digital tickets to the driver using an iPhone or Android app. The apps will also display bar codes that bus officials can scan during occasional spot checks.
"We believe our customers will embrace mobile ticketing as they have in other systems around the country," Michael Setzer, Nassau Inter-County Express' chief executive officer, said in the release. "Our recent on-board survey revealed that nearly 70% of NICE riders own smartphones, suggesting that the mobile platform is a great way to connect with our customers and provide them additional convenience."
