Card Activation Technologies Inc., a Chicago-based company that holds a patent on point-of-sale technology for activating and processing prepaid transactions, announced today it has settled its lawsuit against OfficeMax Inc. The companies did not disclose the terms. Card Activation wants companies violating its patent to pay licensing fees, and it believes many retailers that accept prepaid cards infringe on its patent. According to a Dec. 29, filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Card Activation also has filed patent-infringement suits against Walgreen Co., Barnes & Noble and Aeropostale Inc. (CardLine, 1/6). The company settled with McDonald's Corp., which has taken a license under the patent, according to the filing. Card Activation also settled with TJX Cos. Inc. in November and Sears earlier this month, though the companies disclosed no details about the settlements. Card Activation did not return calls for comment. OfficeMax is based in Naperville, Ill.
