A payment breach at an unnamed Helsinki, Finland, business has exposed transaction records from more than 100,000 payment cards to hackers, reports YLE, a news service of the Finnish Broadcasting Co.
Luottokunta, a Finland-based payment-services company, discovered the breach in January during a security check, according to the news service. About 10,000 of the breached records included full card data, YLE says.
“Deficiencies in the storage system” at the business exposed the card data, Finnish police inspector Jukkapekka Risu told YLE. Police would not identify the business, and the inspector was not available for comment by PaymentsSource’s deadline.
Counterfeiters used the stolen data to make copies of a “few individual cards” used in other parts of the world, Luottokunta tells YLE.
The business has since replaced the breached payment system with a new one, YLE reports. Computer logs indicated the Internet addresses of the hackers appeared to come from the United States and Romania, according to police.
