Card Vendor Provides Obama-Themed Transit Cards

Munich, Germany-based Giesecke & Devrient GmbH delivered 200,000 limited-edition SmarTrip contactless transit cards to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in honor of President Barack Obama's inauguration. The card is a permanent, rechargeable fare card featuring Obama's image. Transit riders can purchase the cards online from the transit authority's Web site and at locations throughout the Washington, D.C., area. The card costs $10 and riders can purchase either a $10 card with no fare value or a $20 card with $10 of fare value. Riders can recharge the card with up to $300 to pay for fares on Metrorail and Metrobus vehicles and to pay for parking.
