Banks in China had issued more than 1.72 billion payment cards by 30 September, up 23% from 1.4 billion cards issued by the end of the third quarter last year, according to the Peoples Bank of China, the country's central bank. The vast majority of those cards were debit cards. Chinese financial institutions had issued 1.59 billion debit cards by the end of the third quarter, up 22.3% from 1.3 billion for the same period last year. Chinese banks had issued 131 million credit cards by the end of the third quarter, up 73.1% from 75.7 million credit cards for the same period last year. China has 185 domestic issuers and 39 foreign issuers, the central bank says.
