China UnionPay and mobile-network operator China Unicom Ltd. have signed a deal to work together on various payment initiatives, a spokesperson for the payment card network tells CardLine Global. The deal calls for the two organizations to collaborate on mobile payments, online payments and cobranded credit cards, the spokesperson says. "[We] will also work on contactless payments, and we are ready with some of these payment" initiatives, the spokesperson adds. The spokesperson offered no timetables for the projects or details about their scope. Beijing-based China Unicom is China's second largest mobile-network operator based on subscribers. Last year, China Unicom launched an online mobile-phone bill-payment service for its mobile customers (CardLine Global, 17 Oct.). Users can register for the service with their credit or debit cards and set up recurring payments.
