In a press release Oct. 29, San Jose-based eBay said it would record a $15 million pretax restructuring charge for the staff reduction of 325 employees and 120 additional contract positions.

During its Oct. 17 third quarter earnings conference call, eBay executives said nine PayPal product teams were consolidated into one, a move designed to simplify and streamline its product development.

Initial reports suggested that as many as 400 PayPal employees were to be cut from a workforce of approximately 13,000.

In May, PayPal announced 15 national retail partners for its digital point of sale payment system. So far, PayPal works with 10 of these retailers in more than 7,000 stores. By yearend, PayPal plans on deploying its system with 10 more retailers. Next year, its retail acceptance is set to grow further through a partnership with Discover Financial Services, giving it access to 7 million U.S. merchant locations. PayPal currently has more than 117 million active accounts.
