Elavon To Market VeriFone Card Reader

VeriFone Systems Inc. is getting a marketing boost for its iPhone payment card reader through a new partnership with the Atlanta processor Elavon.

On Wednesday Elavon, a unit of U.S. Bancorp, said it would market and support the PAYware Mobile system through bank relationships, telephone sales and third-party service providers.

PAYware is a "simple, secure and convenient solution ideal for our small-business customers," Mike Passilla, Elavon's president and chief executive, said in a press release.

Paul Rasori, VeriFone's senior vice president of marketing, said in the release that the relationship would "significantly" expand its marketing reach for the product, which the San Jose terminal maker began selling early this year.

PAYware includes a card encryption sleeve that attaches to Apple Inc.'s smartphone and can be used to swipe payment cards. Users can also perform card-not-present transactions with the mobile PAYware app. The sleeve works with the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

VeriFone is one of several companies that are selling or have announced iPhone payment card readers. Hypercom Corp., MagTek Inc. and Square Inc. have announced devices in the past year.
