EMVCo debuts 3-D Secure test platform for security providers

In a move that could speed up the process of eliminating passwords, the EMVCo specifications body is opening its test platform for EMV 3-D Secure messaging to security providers.

The full EMV 3-D Secure Test Platform will help 3-D Secure providers receive approval from EMVCo by confirming their software operates within the protocol and core-functions specification of EMV 3-D Secure or as part of the standard's software development kit.

The EMV 3-D Secure messaging protocol promotes frictionless authentication by enabling consumers to authenticate themselves with their card issuer through other technologies, such as biometrics, when making card-not-present e-commerce purchases.

Security providers and merchants have been pushing for the 3-D Secure 2.0 protocol to be made available to provide stronger online security and easier transaction processes.

EMVCo says the protocol defines features to promote more secure and consistent consumer e-commerce interactions across channels and connected devices to aid the cardholder experience.

“EMV 3DS promotes consumer familiarity, convenience and security across the rapidly advancing e-commerce environment,” Stephanie Ericksen, EMVCo executive committee chair, said in a Tuesday press release. “The availability of a functional testing framework for EMV 3DS is an important step towards the development of a globally interoperable, secure remote payments ecosystem.”

In addition, EMVCo says it has partnered with the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council to align its testing activity with PCI SSC’s 3DS security standards and assessment programs.

EMVCo, a global technical body that manages the EMV specifications and related testing processes, is owned by American Express, Discover, JCB, Mastercard, UnionPay and Visa. EMVCo says its specifications are designed to be flexible and can be adapted regionally to meet national payment requirements and accommodate local regulations.
