Through a partnership with MasterCard Inc., EE will offer Cash on Tap to allow consumers with Near Field Communication-enabled phones to make purchases of up to £20 ($30 U.S.) at more 230,000 U.K. outlets, the company announced July 3.

The Cash on Tap application represents the first branded mobile contactless service for EE, which operates under the Orange and T-Mobile brands in the U.K.

First-time users will get £10 automatically added to their accounts, with £5 coming when the Cash on Tap application is activated and another £5 when the app is linked to a credit or debit account, EE states in a press release. In addition, Cash on Tap app will allow consumers to track transactions and check balances.

Well-known U.K. retailers such as McDonald's, Boots and Greggs will be among those accepting the Cash on Tap payments, EE says.

Cash on Tap will launch at the same time as other new EE features, including a faster 4G service and the option for business customers or consumers to share their contracts with other businesses or individuals.

Cash on Tap will be available on the Samsung Galaxy S4, the Galaxy S3 LTE and the Sony Xperia SP, with more devices supported in the coming months, EE says.
