A new mobile-payment service enabling fleet drivers to initiate fuel payments through cell phones has been launched in the western region of India.
PayMate India Pvt. Ltd., a mobile and online payments provider, on July 1 announced the launch of its “WayPay” service, which operates solely via text and voice-interactive technology.
The service enables fleet operators to enable drivers to pay for fuel, tires, batteries, and other types of vehicle maintenance with any mobile phone handset and through any mobile operator.
Launched in conjunction with Mumbai-based fleet management technology provider Mahaventures Pvt. Ltd., the service will be available first in Western India.
To use the service, fleet operators first must register their vehicle numbers and drivers’ mobile-phone numbers, a PayMate representative tells PaymentsSource.
Each driver’s mobile number then would link to a prepaid account into which the fleet operator can load funds through various payment channels, accessible via a PIN the driver establishes.
To initiate a purchase, the driver enters a PIN to receive a transaction-authorization code via the handset, the executive said. The merchant then enters the transaction code into a mobile handset to receive the funds in a linked merchant account.
The service enables operators to set spending limits for drivers, but the service enables users to spend up to 5,000 rupees (US$107 or 72 euros) per transaction.
