Former Netflix Executive Barry McCarthy Joins Clinkle as COO

Mobile payments company Clinkle has hired Barry McCarthy to be its chief operating officer.

Prior to joining Clinkle, McCarthy was chief financial officer of Netflix from 1999 to 2010. For the past three years, he's invested in Web startups and has served as an executive advisor to Technology Crossover Ventures, a Silicon Valley venture capital group.

Clinkle has attracted about $25 million in funding from high-profile Silicon Valley investors, including PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel. Clinkle has not revealed much about its technology, though it will reportedly use a mobile app that leverages high-frequency sound emitted by smartphone speakers to execute payments.

Other companies such as VeriFone, Alipay and shopkick, use similar technology.

"Clinkle is one of those rare Netflix-like opportunities, only bigger," says McCarthy in an Oct. 22 press release. "Lucas [Duplan, Clinkle's CEO] has a grand vision for broad-scale disruption of a huge consumer market enabled by growth in mobile devices and brilliant software innovation. That's why Clinkle has been funded by some of the smartest money in Silicon Valley and why I signed on to be Lucas' partner."
