Gemalto To Sell 'Optical' Reader For E-Banking In Germany

IMGCAP(1)]

Gemalto NV Wednesday said it would start selling in Germany "optical" card readers consumers can use to authenticate themselves to online-banking sites. The credit card-sized reader, called "Ezio Optical Tan," has five sensors on its backside capable of reading transaction-authentication information from a consumer's computer screen, a Gemalto spokesperson tells CardLine Global. "The reader displays the transaction data, which will be checked and validated by the user," the spokesperson says. "The reader [then] displays the [one-time passcode], which the user enters into the e-Banking application. Finally, the authentication server at the bank's data center validates the [passcode]." The reader is small enough to fit in consumers' wallets, the spokesperson adds.
