Glasgow has gained the dubious distinction of being the bankruptcy capital of Scotland, according to a report yesterday on the Web site of STV, a television station owned by STV Group Plc. The city and surrounding suburbs recorded 1,287 personal bankruptcies from January through June, up 134.4% from 549 filed during the same period last year, according to STV. The Accountant in Bankruptcy, which administers personal bankruptcies in Scotland, released the statistics last week. Across Scotland, 7,526 consumers were declared bankrupt from January through June, up 74.4% from 4,316 a year earlier. Bankruptcies in other Scottish urban areas also are on the rise. In the Edinburgh area, bankruptcies rose 92.3%, to 1,298 from 675.
