HSBC Launches Contactless Debit Card In Egypt

HSBC Bank Egypt has launched a Visa-branded debit card for its Platinum and Advance savings-account customers in Egypt, the issuer announced Nov. 21.

The EMV chip-and-PIN card requires cardholders to enter a six-digit personal identification number to authorize access to ATMs and point-of-sale terminals. The card also incorporates Visa’s PayWave technology, enabling cardholders to make low-ticket purchases without having to enter their PINs by tapping their cards on terminals with contactless readers.

Cardholders may purchase goods and services at outlets locally and internationally wherever Visa is accepted, up to 20,000 Egyptian pounds (US$3,500 or 2,600 euros) per day, the bank noted in a statement. Cardholders also may withdraw up to 10,000 Egyptian pounds per day at ATMs, and they may access HSBC ATMs outside of Egypt for free.
