Point-of-sale terminal maker Hypercom Corp. yesterday reported a fourth-quarter net loss of $74.8 million. The company reported net income of $262,000 for the same period a year earlier. Revenue, however, was up a 35.9%, $121.6 million from $89.5 million, the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based company says. Hypercom executives cited a $67.8 million charge against the company's goodwill, which measures the intangible value of a firm, such as the corporate identity or reputation, as the reason for the loss. The company says the charge is noncash and "does not affect Hypercom's liquidity position or its cash flow from operating activities." For all of 2008, Hypercom lost $85.4 million, up from a loss of $7.5 million the previous year. Annual revenue totaled $437.3 million, up 51.1% from $289.5 million.
