BBVA is planning a national rollout in Spain of ATMs that look, feel and navigate like iPads, part of a major ATM upgrade for the bank.
Developed by the bank, along with NCR, Fujitsu and design consultant Ideo, the machines have iPad-style screens that display information that’s only relevant to the transaction at hand.
Appearing more like a multi-media device with Web access than a traditional ATM, the new machines include touch screens, which finger-navigate like iPads and rotate at 90-degree angles to give users security from other customers who may be in line.
Cash, statements and receipts are handed out through a single slot.
The bank has deployed the first 20 ATMS, with an additional 200 expected in the coming months in Spain. An introduction of the high-tech ATMs in Latin America and the U.S. will follow.
Vicente Amores, NCR global director for BBVA, said the goal was not necessarily to automate the terminal, but the “humanize” the machines.
