The utility plans to provide the service to consumers living in 11 districts, enabling them to use Visa- and MasterCard-branded credit and debit cards to pay their power bills, according to a statement from the utility. It expects to launch the service within the next two months across the 130 operational subdivisions reaching 2.4 million consumers in the northern region of the state,

Under the plan, consumers may go online to view their bills and pay them using credit or debit cards issued by 40 to 50 banks.

The announcement follows another initiative from the other power utility utility in the state, the Dakshin Haryna Bijli Vitran Nigam, which controls the southern part of Haryana (see story).

In July, citizens in the state of Maharashtra began being able to pay their electricity bills online (see story).

The state of Orissa in January also started a similar online system for paying electricity bills designed for urban consumers and a biometric payment system for customers in the rural areas (see story).
