India’s Paytm Tests 'Sound Wave' Payments

Indian mobile commerce company Paytm plans to test ultrasonic sound waves for mobile payments.

Paytm will add a “Sound Pay” icon to its mobile app. When a consumer presses the icon, sound waves will transmit data including their credentials and the payment amount to the merchants mobile app.

Once the merchant receives the information on their device, they can check to ensure that the consumer has enough money to complete the transaction.

Ultrasonic payments are among a growing number of alternatives to QR codes and Near Field Communication (NFC) to execute mobile payments.

Alibaba, which has a 40% stake in Paytm, has previously trialed sound wave-based payments with its Alipay platform.
