The order follows a string of ATM robberies in the city over the past several months that police say could have been avoided by the extra security.

Among the changes, police have ordered banks to post guards at ATMs and install closed-circuit TV security systems that are not easily detectable so crooks are less likely to try to disable them.

“We want banks to deploy more security guards to secure ATMs,” the spokesperson says. “This is more important when ATMs are placed in high traffic areas, such as convenience stores or shopping malls.”

According to the spokesperson, more than four ATM robberies occurred in the city in December alone. Representatives from state-owned banks Bank Rakyat Indonesia Tbk and PT Bank Mandiri Tbk tell PaymentsSource they intend to comply with the police order.
