Ingenico S.A. and two aviation-industry companies have launched a point-of-sale terminal that can secure immediate issuer authorizations for transactions made in-flight, Ingenico recently announced. The service uses Ingenico's iPA280 wireless POS terminal, Wi-Fi connectivity supplied by Scotland-based AvilT Ltd. and satellite connectivity from Switzerland-based OnAir. It also accepts credit and debit transactions initiated with magnetic stripe or smart cards, Christopher Justice, Ingenico president for North America, tells CardLine sister publication ISO&Agent Weekly, noting the service is in testing with an unspecified airline. More and more airlines over the past few years have begun accepting payment cards on flights, and some have stopped accepting cash altogether. Atlanta-based Delta Airlines Inc. will stop accepting cash on flights beginning tomorrow, a Delta spokesperson tells ISO&Agent Weekly. However, the airline will not secure issuer authorizations for transactions made with its in-flight POS terminal from Toronto-based GuestLogix Inc. until planes land. Ingenico's Justice says airlines could secure lower processing rates with immediate authorizations. The iPA280 device complies with the Payment Card Industry PIN-Entry Device 2.0 standard, Ingenico said in a separate announcement.
