Ireland’s Telefonica O2 Launches Prepaid Visa Card

Telefonica O2 Ireland is teaming with 3V Transaction Services Ltd. to launch 02 Money, a Visa-branded prepaid chip-and-PIN card, the Ireland-based mobile operator announced last week.

R Raphael & Sons PLC, a United Kingdom-based bank that specializes in payment card services, is issuing the card, and Fidelity National Information Systems Inc. is processing the card transactions, according to a spokesperson for 3V Transaction Services, which is providing the operating platform for O2 Money.

Telefonica O2 is making the cards available to its 1 million prepaid-mobile customers, the company noted in a Feb. 17 news release.

Customers of any Irish mobile operator ages 18 or older may purchase the card for 4.99 euros at any O2 store in Ireland. They may add value ranging from 20 euros (US$27) to 350 euros to their card accounts per day through their online-banking service or at any O2 store, and they may use the funds to shop anywhere Visa is accepted globally.

The top-up cost is 80 euro cents online and 99 euro cents at O2 retail locations for loads from 20 euros to 59.99 euros, 1.25 euros and 1.49 euros respectively for loads ranging from 60 euros to 99.99 euros, 1.7 euros and 1.99 euros for loads ranging from 100 euros to 159.99 euros, and 2.55 euros and 2.99 euros for loads ranging from 160 euros to 350 euros.

Cardholders also may access their account funds at any Visa Plus ATM. Fees for ATM withdrawals are 1 euro if conducted within the Euro zone and 2.75% of the withdrawn amount when conducted elsewhere, according to the 3V Transaction Services spokesperson.

Cards expire after four years, at which time customers still actively using their cards may receive a new one with funds transferred from the expired card’s account, he noted in an e-mail.
