Independent sales organization Sterling Payment Technologies has launched an electronic cash register that incorporates payment card acceptance, the company tells CardLine sister publication ISO&Agent Weekly. Dubbed ExpressLane, the register has a built-in card reader and relies on high-speed data connectivity to process payment card transactions. ExpressLane accepts credit, debit and gift card transactions. "We really focus on technology because we realize the ISO market is commodity-driven and everyone sells on price," says Bob Ficarra, Sterling vice president of sales. Reports generated by the register include cash and payment card transactions, something many merchants with separate cash registers and payment terminals must combine manually. The register also includes an inventory-control program. Sterling will lease ExpressLane registers for about $50 a month, Ficarra says. Sales agents could receive as much as $700 in upfront hardware sales commissions. The register has a suggested retail price of $1,599. Ficarra would not disclose the wholesale price that sales agent pay for the equipment. Use of the register also requires the merchant to process its transactions through Tampa, Fla.-based Sterling.
