Merchant account sales agents must be self motivated and maintain a self discipline to be successful as independents sales reps, observers tell ISO&Agent Weekly, a CardLine sister publication. Independent sales organizations sell merchant accounts through sales agents on their staff, through independent contractors or through a combination of both methods. Independent sales agents have to make the sales and handle all of the operational aspects of running a small business. For many, the deciding factor for success is the discipline they set for themselves. "I have the right to be successful or a failure, whatever I choose to do," says Dave Proy, an independent sales rep based in Sandusky, Ohio. "You have to be self motivated. If you can't get out and maintain your own schedule, you'll never make it." Slagle's advice for new independent worker is to adopt a disciplined method of running the business. For him, that means making the face-to-face time with merchants a priority and structuring other tasks around that. Even if something else is planned for a certain time, if a client wants to meet then, "that's where I'm going," Slagle says. "If somebody calls you, that means they're ready."
