Jack Dorsey Would Like to be Mayor of New York

Twitter and Square co-founder Jack Dorsey told "60 Minutes" he would like to move to New York and run for mayor.

"What I love about New York is the electricity I feel right away…it's chaos. It's kind of like being caught in a car during a thunderstorm," he said during the interview, which aired on Sunday, March 17.

Dorsey, who helped found Square, a company that allows smartphones to accept card payments, has previously discussed running for mayor of New York.

As far back as 2011, he told Vanity Fair he was interested and in 2012 told Forbes his role model was current New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Dorsey's pursuit of Gotham is multi-dimensional—Square has attempted to place its technology in New York taxi cabs, though it ended its test early to reconsider its approach.

New York's mayoral race often draws speculation about celebrities and other famous figures from outside the city — a phenomenon that goes far back in history. Other than Bloomberg, a Bostonian who made his fortune in the financial media business, the mayor usually winds up being someone with a background in local politics and deeper ties to the city.   

New York's next mayoral election is in November. Dorsey did not say when he plans to run for mayor. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, and would likely have to move to New York, though the city's residency requirements for mayor are pretty lax.
