The EMV migration in the U.S. affects many companies, but terminal makers like Verifone are seeing some of the biggest changes.

"Over the past year, I have focused on making sure we are providing U.S. clients and partners with everything needed to ensure a successful transition to EMV in time for the [Oct.2015] liability shift," said Jennifer Miles, who became president of the Americas for Verifone two years ago. "Fortunately we have decades of experience implementing EMV around the globe and are leveraging this experience to help U.S. merchants."

For most merchants, EMV and contactless mobile payments go hand in hand, since the same terminal upgrade can handle both technologies.

"Without a doubt, EMV, security and mobility are going to dominate the payments space this year," Miles said. "We view this as an opportunity to continue driving innovation at the point of sale with our Payments-as-a-Service offering, expanded rollout of our Secure Commerce Architecture solution and some very exciting mobile products and partnerships that will help our clients transform the in-store shopping experience with new levels of engagement and productivity."

Miles is also involved with Verifone's Commerce Enablement Hub, an initiative to diversify the merchant services tied to the point of sale. It's part of an ongoing strategy at Verifone to broaden services as the company recovers from earlier business challenges. Miles was previously recognized in 2014 as one of PaymentsSource's Most Influential Women in Payments.

"This is transforming the physical point of sale from a payment center to a customer engagement hub, where consumers can make purchases using their preferred method of payment while interacting with intelligent, multimedia channels that inform, promote special product offers and even entertain," Miles said.

Miles, who has been in the payments industry for more than 20 years, said there are still challenges for women in the business that are not unique to her industry. "But, I believe we have many strong role models that are demonstrating and validating the possibilities every day," Miles said.
