An estimated 500 collection agencies and creditors were sued in the June 1-15 period, down from 584 in the previous half-month period, according to data pulled from U.S. District Courts.
Consumers filed at estimated 502 consumer statute lawsuits between June 1-15, including 442 cases citing Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) violations, 40 Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) violations and 37 Truth-in-Lending Act (TILA) offenses. There were an estimated 559 unique plaintiffs in the cases. Of the plaintiffs, approximately 160 had sued under consumer statutes before. Combined, the plaintiffs have filed an estimated 1,057 lawsuits since 2001, reports WebRecon LLC, a Grand Rapids, Mich.- based firm that tracks the data from the courts.
Year-to-date, an estimated 6,427 total lawsuits have been filed against collection agencies and creditors, including 5,412 FDCPA violations, 580 TILA cases and 556 FCRA cases.
Tommy Lee Hussin was the most active attorney between June 1-15, representing 18 consumers. For 2011, David M. Larson has represented 166 consumers, followed by Craig T.
