Magento Inc. and PayPal Inc. this week announced an expansion of an earlier partnership that will enable online retailers to accept PayPal payments through Magento’s open-source shopping platform.
Magento will promote and integrate PayPal into Magneto’s open source platform to merchants and developers already using Magento for their online businesses. This integration will make it easier for merchants and developers to run e-commerce and online platforms, Magento says in a recent release.
Merchants also eventually will have automatic access to PayPal’s global payment engine to offer payment services in additional markets, Chris Marshall, business development manager at Los Angeles-based Magento, tells PaymentsSource.
Magento’s platform has two editions: a free community edition, which offers just a basic e-commerce platform for merchants, developers or individuals in a noncritical environment, and an enterprise edition, which starts at $11,125 per year.
The enterprise edition also provides retailers with such features as data encryption, control to restrict staff access, and the option for consumers to purchase physical and virtual gift certificates/cards and to create store credits tied to customer accounts so they may use their credits online. Through the enterprise edition, merchants also may create rewards programs.
Magento and PayPal will be co-marketing their services through Web seminars available on Magento’s Web site, Marshall says. Additionally, the two companies will be working to update their services later this year.
