MasterCard Inc. is stepping up its efforts to encourage merchants to comply with the Payment Card Industry data security standard.

The Purchase, N.Y., card company said Wednesday that it is expanding its merchant education program by adding seminars on data encryption, network segmentation, and internal preparations for meeting the standard. MasterCard began the merchant education program in October to help acquirers educate their merchant clients on the PCI standard, which helps protect card data against exposure.
