Mastercard issuers add true names for transgender cardholders

Two Mastercard issuers have enabled Mastercard’s True Name feature for customers who opt to use their preferred name on credit, debit and prepaid cards instead of their legal name, to support gender inclusion.

BMO Harris and Superbia Credit Union are the first issuers to use True Name, which Mastercard rolled out this year for members of the transgender and non-binary communities who say they are misrepresented when shopping, according to a Friday press release.

BMO Harris will add the True Name feature for ATM and debit cards next month, while Superbia will enable it across the credit union’s Mastercard portfolios next year, the release said.

“At Mastercard we strive to cultivate a culture of inclusion that extends both internally and externally. We are continuing to call on the industry to help us ensure that each and every person’s financial products can reflect their true identity,” said Cheryl Guerin, Mastercard’s executive vice president of marketing and communications, in the release.

Mastercard research indicated 32% of individuals who have shown IDs with a name or gender that did not match their presentation reported negative experiences, such as harassment, denial of service and even attacks, the release said.
