MasterCard Launches Prepaid Card Promotion

MasterCard Worldwide on July 7 unveiled “Get Loot,” a promotion offering new prepaid customers free movie tickets and opportunities to win a trip to a 2012 movie premiere.

Customers who sign up and load money onto a qualified MasterCard prepaid card from now through the end of October will receive two free movie tickets as long as supplies last.

Prepaid cardholders will also have opportunities from now until the end of the December to win other movie-related prizes.

“We’re excited about the program and happy to be able to help our partners and promote what we think is a great product,” Brett Adams, MasterCard’s lead for U.S. prepaid products, tells PaymentsSource.

According to a recent study by Aite Group (see story), many prepaid cardholders do not see prepaid debit cards as a long-term solution for their financial needs.

But Aite Group research suggests loyalty and rewards programs might help keep customers on for the long haul.

Though MasterCard’s strategy has been to forge long-term relationships with prepaid customers, the company is considering more programs in the future to encourage customers to keep reloading funds onto their cards, Adams says.

“It’s something we’re very much considering and continue to look at day to day,” he says. “We’ll be looking to the success of the ‘Loot’ program to see what we want to do.”
