Mastercard, Lazada team for online push in SE Asia

Mastercard and Lazada, an Alibaba affiliate, have joined forces to collaborate on e-commerce systems for developing markets in the Southeast Asia region.

Mastercard will provide data insights, promotions and rewards programs for Singapore-based Lazada’s online marketplace in developing markets, and Lazada will be the anchor merchant for certain new Mastercard solutions in the region, Mastercard said in a Thursday press release.

“Our partnership with Lazada builds open marketplaces and advances digital democratization, bringing more to buyers and sellers in the region,” said Rama Sridhar, Mastercard’s executive vice president of digital and emerging partnerships and new payment flows, in the release.

“This partnership allows merchant to leverage Mastercard’s data and insights to better reach out to and engage with their customers,” said Mary Zhou, Lazada Group’s chief marketing officer, in the release.

Lazada, launched in 2012 by Rocket Internet SE, is a leading e-commerce marketplace in Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba invested $1 billion in Lazada in 2017, gaining a controlling stake in the operation, and poured another $2 billion into it last year.
