MasterCard Offers Islamic Debit Card in Malaysia

MasterCard has launched a new Shariah-compliant debit card in Malaysia.

The card will be available to customers of Lembaga Tabung Haji, the country's largest Islamic financial institution.

"With this collaboration, Tabung Haji depositors will enjoy the convenience of a globally accepted MasterCard debit card and give them access to their accounts whether at home in Malaysia, traveling to Makkah or Madinah as part of their pilgrimage or other locations," says Matthew Driver, president at MasterCard in Southeast Asia, in a June 5 press release.

The debit card will be accepted at over 38 million locations worldwide, including in Saudi Arabia. Tabung Haji is one of the largest Islamic financial institutions in Malaysia, with 8.4 million depositors and 120 branches, the release says.
