The Purchase, N.Y., credit card network said Chinese consumers will be able to use MasterPass to in-app payments in 14 countries, as well as contactless payments in 67 countries.

"The introduction of MasterCard cloud-based payments to Chinese financial institutions will create a truly seamless and secure payment experience on any device," said Dennis Chang, a general manager at MasterCard, in the release.

The cloud-based digital service uses secure tokens and EMV cryptography to authenticate payments. It also uses host card emulation to enable contactless, NFC-based transactions.

MasterCard this summer announced plans to expand its digital wallet. The company most recently launched MasterPass in Taiwan at the end of November.
