Merchant Solutions Lands Another UnionPay Deal

China UnionPay and Merchant Solutions, a joint venture of United Kingdom-based international bank Standard Chartered PLC and United States-based transaction processor First Data Corp., have a signed a deal designed to expand UnionPay acceptance in Asia, a Merchant Solutions spokesperson tells CardLine Global. The deal, finalized this week, enables merchants in Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka to accept UnionPay cards, the spokesperson says. Merchant Solutions and UnionPay previously signed a card-acceptance deal for merchants in Hong Kong and Macau. UnionPay was unable to provide immediate comment. Standard Chartered and First Data announced the joint venture in 2007 (CardLine Global, 20 Nov. 2007).
